Character Development- El Patron

So after reading about a third of the book I think that I know a little bit about El Patron.  Firstly, he is a giant drug lord that deals only in opium.  Secondly he lives in a strip of land between what once was Mexico and the USA. This country is called opium (not surprising) this is because El Patron is a major drug dealer and all he deals with is opium.  Everyone respects him and does not want to disrespect him or make him mad. He grew up in a small town with seven siblings that all died and he was the only one left.   All of his siblings died some way and he devoted everything in his live to getting rich no matter the cost.  I think that he has power over everyone in Opium. The reason why this country is allowed to exist is because the USA and Mexico struck a deal (because they couldn't stop the drugs anyways) in which the people of opium would not sell to the citizens of the USA or Mexico and they would stop illegal immigrants from coming over the boarder. So the USA and Mexico got a safe boarder and the people of Opium got to deal the drugs and be safe. I think that El Patron is not a good guy because of the thing that Tam Lim said that he is a tree with twisted branches. I think that there is more to his relationship with Matt than it seems. I believe that he needs Matt for something more than just his heir to the "throne." I think that he is plotting something that Matt is involved in (like making him his slave or using him for spare parts.) This reminds me of another movie I have seen The Island. I look forward to reading the book more!  - Evan Delay
